This study is designed
to decide if Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy (CRT) along with an Implantable
Cardiac Defibrillator (ICD) will slow or stop progression of heart failure.
The two of these combined is called Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy
and Defibrillation (CRT-D). We know that patients with advanced heart
failure have a decrease in hospitalizations and symptoms with CRT-D.
The purpose of this study is to decide if people who have impaired heart
function will have improved survival and less heart failure with implantation
of an automatic defibrillator device that can also pace the heart more
efficiently using resynchronization (CRT-D) when compared to people
treated with only an implanted defibrillator (ICD-only).
