Michael
J. Mack received his Medical Doctorate at St. Louis University
where he graduated cum laude in 1973. He later completed an internship
at M.D. Anderson Hospital and the Tumor Institute in Houston,
Texas and at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. He completed
his residencies at the latter as well as the University of Texas
Southwestern Medical School at Dallas.
Dr. Mack began his practice of Cardiothoracic Surgery in Dallas
in 1983 when he became one of the founders of the Cardiothoracic
Surgery Associates of North Texas (CSANT), P. A. He is on staff
at a dozen hospitals in Texas and has visiting Professorships
in the People's Republic of China, Brazil, Egypt and Sweden. He
is board certified in Surgery, Thoracic Surgery and Internal Medicine.
As well as making over 150 presentations on Cardiac and Thoracic
Surgery in over 30 countries, Dr. Mack has published over 100
peer review journals, over 60 book chapters and edited three books
on surgery.
Dr. Mack's involvement in the creation and development of Minimally
Invasive Surgical Techniques dates back to 1990 when he became
interested in video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS). He holds
office on numerous committees concerning Minimally Invasive Surgery,
including: The American Association of Thoracic Surgery/The Society
of Thoracic Surgeons Joint Committee on Thoracoscopy and Video
Assisted Surgery, Video Assisted Thoracic Study Group Committee,
Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board on Minimally Invasive
Cardiac Surgery, MInimally Invasive Thoracic Surgery Interest
Group and The Society of Thoracic Surgeons Ad Hoc Committee on
New Technology Assessment.
Dr. Mack was instrumental in the development of Endoscopic Spine
Surgery and has continued research on endoscopic applications
of Cardiac Surgery since 1992. He also holds an interest the field
of Thoracic Transplantation. He is the Director of Heart and Lung
Transplantation at Medical City Dallas Hospital, as well as Director
of the Heart and Lung Failure Program. Dr. Mack and his colleague
Dr. Tea Acuff initiated the development of the Cardiopulmonary
Research Science and Technology Institute (CRSTI) and he serves
as the chairman of the CRSTI Board of Directors.
